STRONGSVILLE, Ohio – Chrysler Corporation has installed a PPG Aquabase Plus waterborne paint system in its Auburn Hills, Mich. National Technical Training Center, a change from traditional solvent-based coatings that Chrysler says is part of its commitment to work with environmentally friendly products and procedures. This move brings the training center into conformance with other Chrysler facilities, and a majority of Chrysler assembly plants already use PPG waterborne coatings.

Ron Nomura, Chrysler’s paint platform body structures manager, dealer technical operations, says, “We have been using PPG systems for years. When we decided to go green, we looked closely at Aquabase Plus. We were very impressed. It passed all our standards. It’s easier to use. It’s excellent for color-matching and blends smoothly.”

The National Technical Training Center evaluates equipment and materials and approves aftermarket refinish products for the OEM. Implementing the use of waterborne coatings had been under consideration for the center ever since California and Canada mandated their use in an effort to reduce VOC emissions.

“We have always had a strong relationship with Chrysler,” adds Ken Davis, PPG manager, OEM business development. “Needless to say, we’re very pleased Chrysler chose the Aquabase Plus system for their training center. As an OEM, they’re always looking to their manufacturing partners to see how we can help continuously improve their overall quality. Selecting PPG coatings is recognition of the value and excellence of our coatings.”
