2001 Oldsmobile Aurora:
A Change for the Better
Oldsmobile stirred up its own winds of change, but it wasn?t because the Aurora was sailing in the wrong direction. It was quite the contrary.

Well-received in the marketplace with more than 100,000 units sold, Oldsmobile redesigned the Aurora for 2001, attempting to make an already formidable luxury vehicle even better. The elegant appearance, solid mechanics and renewed emphasis on safety are proof that the best days still may be ahead for Oldsmobile?s flagship, introduced to the market in 1994.

Exterior changes ? ones that maintain the classy look and add a touch of sport - are fueled by an attempt to broaden the consumer base, according to Oldsmobile. The target audience is a younger, sophisticated demographic ? and includes more women. The choice of engines reflects the more widespread appeal, with Aurora offering a 4.0 liter V8 or a 3.5 liter V6.

Oldsmobile says the V8 is lighter than the original Aurora V8, due to the use of aluminum and a "more efficient manufacturing process." Both engines have cylinder heads and a cylinder block made of aluminum.

Mechanically, the vehicle offers a long list of standard equipment: The 4-speed automatic transmission with electronic controls is equipped with Magnasteer - a speed sensitive steering system ? and full function traction control is at the ready on every car. Battery rundown protection and four-wheel independent suspension also come standard.

As proud as Aurora is about mechanical triumphs, it?s equally ecstatic about safety. Oldsmobile not only created a stronger, more rigid body, but incorporated the latest technology into the 2001 model. The safety cage is designed so "the front and rear cage members can give in the event of a crash, absorbing the impact and protecting the passengers inside." Oldsmobile says the new construction process for the cage allows the roof to exceed federal standards. A front side air bag system raises the safety level, as well.

The interior equipment for the Aurora, a vehicle manufactured in Lake Orion, MI, is highlighted by an air filtration system, leather seats and walnut wood trim.
