General MotorsIt’s been with us for 34 years. It’s horsepower
doubled. It’s body style sleeker with every model-year. The sports car
enthusiast’s passion for it remains the same. But, rumor has it, it’ll be around for only a few more years.
If this is true, you’d better get it while you can.
American motorists have long lusted over the "American
Classic" from the time it was used as the Indy 500 Pace Car in 1967. Then, it was a
350-cubic-inch small-block V8. Today, the Camaro is still among the first to receive some
of the industries biggest advances in safety and technology. In 1969 it featured energy
absorbing steering column and steering wheel. In 1972 it had steel side-door beams and
3-point front safety belts. In 1989 it featured a PASS-Key theft-deterrent as standard on
its models as well as driver air bags. The 1999 model has the acceleration slip regulation
(ASR) available. In 34 years all models have demonstrated futuristic features that give
the driver a powerful feeling.
The 2000 model continues its tradition
of power and eye-candy, but with a few changes on the inside and
out.
This year, the ebony interior with gray
cloth replaces the darker gray with red accents from last year, and
includes cloth on the seats and door trim. The interior complements
the Monterey Maroon Metallic exterior finish with 17-inch aluminum
wheels?available only on the SS.
On the inside,
revisions were made to both the V6 and V8 LS1 engines to meet
California Low Emission Vehicle regulations. Standard
on the SS is its 3800 V6 engine with sequential fuel injection (SFI).
A one-piece flex plate, new a/c plumbing, a new converter catalyst
loading, a Borg Warner T2 air pump and Multiec II fuel injectors are
new to the V6 engine. The SS is available in five-speed manual
transmission as well as an optional four-speed electronically
controlled automatic transmission.
