Except for adding variable valve timing to the smaller engine and an optional 5-speed automatic transmission, mechanical changes over the years have been few.

Information given here is for the larger engine, which is made by Mazda and also is used in the Ford Focus.

This engine has a cartridge-type oil filter, and valves are adjusted by replacing the lifters. This model also has an electric power steering pump. The A/C belt is removed by cutting it, and a special installation tool is packaged with the new belt. The alternator belt, as well as the rest of this vehicle's maintenance and repair, is more conventional.

Mazda doesn't issue as many Technical Service Bulletins (TSBs) as other manufacturers, so it seems that each one tends to be important. Bulletins have been issued for no-start in park (install modified shift lock cable), no-start caused by faulty starter connections, a faulty Variable Tumbler Shutter Valve (on the intake manifold), power steering fluid leak, a leaking coolant outlet gasket, MIL illumination with fuel trim and EVAP codes (stuck purge solenoid), failed MAP sensor, and rough idle with misfire codes. A Service Campaign was launched to reprogram the PCM because it displays oxygen sensor codes incorrectly.

There's already a healthy aftermarket for the sportier models, including intake and exhaust systems, suspension pieces, brake upgrade kits, body parts, interior trim and, of course, wheels and tires. Major performance parts like pistons and rods are also available aftermarket, but the choices are somewhat limited. Still, some people have found lots of horsepower in this little motor.
