Michelin: Tire dealers can cement more profits for concrete mixers with single-mount system
Trucks, trailers and other wheeled workhorse equipment could be capable of producing a bigger payload when a commercial vehicle’s overall weight is lightened by using Michelin’s X One tires to replace a traditional dual-mount system with a single wide-based tire, company engineers report.
For example, Schwing-Stetter concrete mixer trucks equipped with the X One XYZ 3 would be able to hold an additional 560 pounds of concrete with each load, according to Bill Bigot, mixer division director at Schwing America.
“With Michelin X One tires, our customers can realize a savings of more than 500 pounds of vehicle weight,” says Bigot.
“This will allow them to deliver more concrete on the truck, making them more productive and more profitable,” he explains. “Customers are thrilled with the fact they can carry that last half yard of concrete essentially for free with the use of the X One tires and our light-weight drum.”
Schwing’s newest light-weight drum technology, currently in the testing stage, was recently displayed at the World of Concrete Exposition in Las Vegas.
“If a guy does a lot of on-road work, the tire would be a great solution,” says Charlie Schumacher, Schwing’s sales director for ready mix products. “It also does very good off-road; it would be suitable for a lot of areas.”
In addition to the weight savings, the X One features lower rolling resistance that will improve the vehicle’s fuel economy by up to 10 percent, according to Michelin.
The company’s Infini-Coil Technology consists of more than a quarter-mile of steel cord wrapped circumferentially around the tire from sidewall to sidewall. The process reduces casing growth and stabilizes a flat contact patch to decrease irregular wear.
The tire also provides enhanced protection against stone drilling through variable pitch groove walls and groove bottom protectors in the center grooves. Chips and cuts are less likely to occur, and a reinforced bead package with a wide metallic chafer assures bead durability and resistance to heat.
