Toyo Tire Holdings of Americas, Inc., parent firm of both Toyo Tire USA Corp. and Nitto Tire USA., Inc., has announced plans to replace free-of-charge nearly 600 faulty 18-inch Proxes 4, Proxes FZ4 and Nitto NT555 tires.
Company executives term the situation a “customer satisfaction campaign” rather than a recall.
They say Toyo “has determined through rigorous testing that these tires do not have any performance or safety issues, and that these tires meet or exceed all U.S. government requirements. There have been no reported accidents or injuries associated with these tires.”
The problem stems from a belt-edge tape “that may not meet strict dimensional requirements set forth” by the company.
Consumers who have purchased these types of tires since May are encouraged to inspect them and visit an authorized Toyo of Nitto dealer for assistance.
They were manufactured at the Toyo plant White, Ga. during the 18th week of 2008 and are identifiable by the Made in U.S.A. stamp and the numbers 1808 at the end of the Department of Transportation (DOT) serial number located on the sidewall.
The same model tires manufactured in Japan, identified by a Made in Japan stamp on the sidewall, are not included in the notification. Same-model tires manufactured in the United States outside of the 18th week of 2008 are also not included.
