There is a choice of two powerful engines with eight or 12 cylinders. The eight-cylinder powerplant in the CL500 delivers 285 kW/388 horsepower (hp) and generates a maximum torque of 530 Nm from 2,800 rpm. Equipped with four-valve technology, variably adjustable shifting camshafts, a two-stage intake module and tumble flaps in the intake ducts, the new V8 accelerates from zero to 100 km/h in just 5.4 seconds, nearly a full second faster than its predecessor at 6.3 seconds.  The CL600 features a bi-turbo, 12-cylinder engine that generates 380 kW/517 hp and 830 Nm of torque that remains constant between 1,900 rpm and 3,500 rpm. The new CL600 accelerates from zero to 100 km/h in just 4.6 seconds, while consuming 0.4 liter less fuel per 100 kilometers than its predecessor.

The automatic climate control in the CL-Class employs a new system with four temperature zones that can be adjusted independently.

Combined with the new Direct Select gearshift, drivers can nudge a lever on the steering column to select the transmission settings, which then transmits operating commands electronically by wire. The CL600 is equipped with a five-speed automatic. Enhanced safety The two-door coupe incorporates a host of standard equipment features, including Pre-Safe Brake and Occupant Protective systems, Active Body Control suspension and Intelligent Light that replaces the low-beam headlamps and illuminates the driver's-side edge of the road more brightly and widely. An optional parking assist system also is available. Pre-Safe is an anticipatory occupant protection system developed by Mercedes-Benz. It recognizes a potential accident situation in its early stages and initiates appropriate occupant protection measures. Pre-Safe is standard in the new CL-Class.

The new coupe is slightly larger than its predecessor. The body is 75mm longer, 14mm wider and 20mm higher than before.
(Photo: Mercedes-Benz) M-B has improved this protection system for the CL-Class with the newly developed Pre-Safe Brake system. It operates in tandem with Brake Assist Plus, which warns the driver of an imminent rear-end collision via visual and audible signals and automatically calculates the required braking pressure to prevent an accident.  Both Pre-Safe systems use radar technology to scan the situation in front of the car and detect a potential accident. Two short-range radar sensors, with a range of 30 meters and a scanning angle of 80 degrees, are located behind the front bumper fascia. The additional long-range radar in the radiator grille has a range of 150 meters. Both systems are offered in conjunction with optional Distronic Plus proximity cruise control. The Active Body Control (ABC) suspension system is based on sensor signals and uses specially designed hydraulic cylinders at the axles. The system is designed to eliminate the customary pitch and roll of the body that occur when moving off, cornering and braking. At speeds above 60 km/h, ABC lowers the body by up to 10mm in the "Sport" program to reduce drag and improve handling stability.
The new CL-Class is equipped as standard with Active Body Control and Adaptive Brakes.

Examples include the typical M-B radiator grille with its wide chrome louvers and the design of the C-pillar. Other design features that remain include fully retractable side windows, whose continuous aperture is not interrupted by a B-pillar, and the large, curving panoramic rear windshield.  Fingertip controls A central control system, already used in the S-Class, is designed to provide convenient access to frequently used functions, such as the radio, DVD player, car phone or navigation system. Depending on the driver's preference, these systems can be controlled using switches in the center console, on the steering wheel or using the COMAND controller on the center console.  The standard automatic climate control with four independent, adjustable temperature zones is also integrated into the new control system. The driver and front passenger can select temperature, air distribution and other settings, as well as air distribution and the foot well temperature.  (Source: DaimlerChrysler)Click here for the Technical Specs chart.
