Yokohama’s husband and wife team of Cameron and Heidi Steele, both racing on Geolandar tires, fared well in Mexico at the Sept. 10 SCORE San Felipe Challenge of Champions.
Heidi Steele – battling severe stomach flu – won the Class 6 division with assistance from co-driver Rene Brugger and his son Richie, while Cameron finished fifth in the division, and seventh overall among all 77 racers.
“Rene deserves all the credit for this win,” says Heidi. “I could only drive a small part of the race because I was really sick. But Rene and his son stepped-up and drove our Yokohama tire-shod Ford Ranger to victory.”
It was the second win this season in San Felipe for Heidi Steele and Brugger, who won on the same course in March. This time they finished the 250-mile race on their off-the-shelf Geolandar M/T+ tires with a time of 5:57:12.
“It worked out good for us, thanks to the Yokohama tires handling the tough terrain and guiding us to victory,” says Heidi. “We’re pretty stoked to be in the points lead heading into the Baja 1000 in November.”
Cameron Steele teamed with Rick Geiser and Cody Stuart to run their GMC Sierra – with new custom-made 40-inch Geolandar tires – to a season-best fifth place in 4:40:06.
“It was our first race on the 40-inch Yokohama Geolandar tires,” says Cameron, “so we kind of used this race as a little bit of a tire test. It went really good. It’s cool to be here in the top five. We always want to win but this time there was a concentrated effort on making sure that we did a good job getting ready for the Tecate SCORE Baja 1000.”
