Toyo has received verification from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) SmartWay program for a trio of its commercial tire offerings; the M137 steer tire, the M127 free rolling tire for trailer axles and the M657 – a new drive tire soon to be available in the American market.

SmartWay identifies products and services, such as low-rolling resistance tires, that assist in reducing transportation-related emissions.

“We are very pleased to have three of our premium products named to the EPA’s SmartWay program for low-rolling resistant tires,” says Ron Gilbert, director of commercial products.

“Toyo Tires has always been known for offering high quality, technologically advanced medium truck tires,” he notes. “These tires, along with our e-balance technology, demonstrate Toyo Tires’ ongoing commitment both to the commercial trucking industry and to the environment.”

Based on information provided by tire manufacturers along with EPA testing and research, the agency has determined that certain tires can lower nitrogen oxides (NOx) emissions, according to Gilbert.

An additional benefit is an estimated fuel savings of 3 percent or more if applied to the “best selling” new tires when installed on all five axles of long haul class 8 trucks, he adds. As a result, verified tires are required as a component on SmartWay Certified Tractors and SmartWay Certified Trailers.

“Ideal for long haul, highway applications,” says Gilbert, the M137 and M657 are developed using the company’s e-balance technology, “which focuses on a stiffer belt package, stiffer bead construction and optimization through simulation technology. Benefits include improved tire life, improved endurance, improved irregular wear resistance and improved fuel consumption.”
