Only 43 of the 100 competitors in the King of the Hammers desert-and-rock race were able to complete the contest – and 34 of the finishers were running on BFGoodrich tires.
Co-drivers Loren Healy and Rodney Woodey, who had started in the 53rd position, took the checkered flag with 39-inch Krawler T/A KX tires. They covered the 135-mile loop course in just under seven hours to claim the coveted scepter.
“I have always competed on BFGoodrich tires,” says Healy, praising the tire maker’s support staff.
Team BFGoodrich co-drivers Brad Lovell and Bill Kunz barely missed out on the win, finishing only 28 seconds behind Healy and Woodey. Lovell and Kunz were using 37-inch Baja T/A KRT tires while third place finishers Derek West and Jason Henne ran with 39-inch Bajas, which are designed specifically for rock racing and the King of the Hammers site in Johnson Valley, Calif.
In addition to being the Feb. 13-14 event’s official tire, Goodrich provided pit and communications assistance via a fleet of off-road vehicles involving more than 40 volunteers.
Some 30,000 spectators viewed the contest, which included the unveiling of a new Goodrich 42-inch off-road racing tire.
The top 11 teams and 80 percent of the overall finishers were using the company’s tires, according to motorsports manager Roberts Kukainis.
