Continental Tire has broken ground on a new state-of-the-art factory in China’s Anhui Province. Located in the Hefei New and High Technology Industrial Development Zone, the 28,000 square-foot plant will utilize the latest tire production equipment while applying environmentally friendly processes to produce medium- and high-end car tires for the both Chinese and overseas export markets.
“Continental is already represented in China with 18 factories and several development centers. This is, however, our first facility in Hefei – which represents also Continental’s first tire production plant in China,” says Heinz-Gerhard Wente, a member of Continental’s executive board.
“This will be a next step forward to achieve our goal of strengthening our Asian business,” he explains.
“Continental has 137 years of experience with rubber and especially with tires. Nowadays we produce about 120 million tires a year worldwide,” Wente says. “We will invest around 185 million Euros in the Hefei plant, which is scheduled to be completed by 2010. We are aiming for an annual production of four million…tires here in Hefei in the first step. In the long run our capacity should exceed ten million tires a year by far.”
