American Tire Distributors, Inc. has purchased Remington Tire Distributors, which is more commonly known to the industry as Gray’s Wholesale Tire Distributors.

American says the acquisition will further enhance the company’s service level to tire dealers across Texas and Oklahoma. Gray’s operated two wholesale distribution centers in Texas – one in Houston and one in Fort Worth – serving more than 3,000 customers.

Terms of the transaction were not disclosed.

“American Tire Distributors began servicing tire retailers across Texas and Oklahoma in July of 2004,” notes Richard P. “Dick” Johnson, chairman and CEO. “Since that time, we have invested in our facilities, our people and our customers and, as a result, we have gained new customers and market share,” he explains.

“The acquisition of Gray’s is another investment that will enable American Tire Distributors to better serve our customers in these two states,” Johnson says.

Gray’s was founded by Harold Gray in 1975 in Fort Worth. Steve Gray, the founder’s son, joined the company in 1976. That same year, Gray’s opened a second distribution center in Houston. Steve Gray has been president and chairman of the company since 1988. He will join American and focus on customer development.

American is one of the nation’s largest independent suppliers of tires to the replacement market. It operates 80 distribution centers serving 36 states. Johnson says “the company focuses on helping tire and wheel retail dealers compete with larger retailers by offering the most complete, coast-to-coast selection of tires, wheels and related products and value-added services.”

It employs more than 2,200 people across a nationwide distribution center network, including 200 workers in its Charlotte, N.C.-area field support center, distribution center and regional hub.
