HOW IT WORKS:
Jeff Zuber says that as soon as he saw the tool 10 months ago, he knew his shop—Greenfield Auto Services in Newark, N.J.—needed it.
“Put it this way: We take pride in our craftsmanship and, of course, our number one priority is our customer,” he says. “With that machine, the quality, the craftsmanship, it’s all-around unity.”
In fact, it was so apparent that Zuber purchased the Pro Spot SP-5 MIG welder right from his tool rep that first time he saw it.
The smart MIG welder has three MIG torches and three spools that can be set up for three different base metals: aluminum, silicon bronze and steel. The shielding gas and weld program with the appropriate synergic curve automatically switch when pulling the trigger. In synergic mode, the microprocessor controls optimal arc stability and weld quality. Zuber says his technicians are able to simply pick up the appropriate torch and pull the trigger, while the microprocessor and weld programs automatically switch.
The benefit of having three individual torches with their own wire is that you can work on multiple vehicles with different materials without changing out the wires and liners, says Zuber. Due to more and more aluminum and ultra high-strength steel vehicle components showing up in the shop, he says it’s a huge time saver for shops.
