July 19, 2018—A government audit released on Wednesday faults the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's oversight of auto safety recalls, reported Reuters.
The audit says the delayed action may have delayed the expansion of a record-setting callback of millions of vehicles for Takata air bag inflators, according to the report.
The report found that in the Takata air bag recalls, the agency did not follow its own procedures to address low recall completion rates.
According to Reuters, in a statement, NHTSA did not directly address specific concerns raised. “NHTSA is dedicated to continuous improvement of the risk-based processes addressing potential safety defects and recalls,” the agency said on Wednesday.
