The high price of Tesla collision repairs has posed a problem for consumers, such as one Tesla owner who was met with a bill exceeding $23,000, Car Scoops reports.
Ryan Shaw is a YouTuber who makes videos about Teslas and is the owner of one himself. Shaw had previously suffered a fender bender to his vehicle, resulting in rear bumper damage that would cost $8,701.33 to repair.
Since then, the vehicle has been through another rear-end collision that was so severe the vehicle could not drive away. The repair for this accident would cost Shaw $23,614.
These high prices are not unique to Shaw’s situation. Tesla repair prices are expensive due to factors such as being luxury vehicles and having sensors in vulnerable areas like the bumper. Due to the high cost, many insurance companies will simply decide to salvage damaged Teslas.
In the case a Tesla’s integrated battery pack is damaged, it will be immediately totaled as they are not possible to repair. A study done by two major salvage companies showed that a “vast majority” of Tesla Model Ys that were totaled only had 10,000 miles or less on the odometer.
