After Report, N.Y. Officials Change Recall Policies

Vehicles with open recalls that have “dangerous defects" are being sold at New York City-area auctions, along with multiple area dealerships, which has alarmed consumers. As a result, the state is looking to change its recall policies.
June 7, 2018—An investigative report by Spectrum News NY 1 recently noted that vehicles with active recalls are being sold at more than 50 New York City-area auctions, along with multiple area dealerships.
The New York media outlet went to three recent auctions and found 25 vehicles with open recalls for what it termed “dangerous defects.”
Currently, there’s no federal law requiring used-car sellers to fix or disclose safety recalls the way that new-car sellers must. But, in the aftermath of the Spectrum News NY 1 report, a city sheriff’s office that was interviewed during the report said it planned to update its website, allowing buyers to check for recalls.
Additionally, New York state said it will post recall notices online, on cars, and auctioneers will, in the future, announce recalls.
