Recycled Rides donates refurbished vehicles and gifts them to families in need and organizations dedicated to assisting others. In addition to body shops donating their labor, insurers, paint suppliers, parts vendors and rental car companies contribute.
“The program brings together different segments of the industry for the greater good by providing reliable transportation to those that might not otherwise have access to it,” noted Rafael Hinojos, collision business development director for the Van Tuyl Group. “Industry participants find they get a great lift from putting their skills to use to make a positive difference in the lives of others. Many find it so compelling they decide to repeat involvement, year after year.”
Each Recycled Rides event is local in focus, and the program works with charities in specific geographic areas to find qualified recipients needing a vehicle to help them continue leading productive lives. Two charities are involved in the Dallas-area event. The Irving, Texas chapter of Family Promise is a nonprofit interfaith network that provides support to families in crisis. It trains volunteers to act as advisors and advocates for at-risk families, helping them achieve goals and maintain self-sufficiency. Trinity River Mission is a volunteer-based community learning center that promotes literacy, encourages academic success and develops effective life skills among disadvantaged youth in West Dallas, in the belief that education can connect these individuals to life’s possibilities.
The cars to be refurbished were donated by Enterprise Rent-A-Car, Hertz Rent-a-Car, Farmers Insurance and two of the participating shops.
The five local collision centers that donated their labor to refurbish the vehicles are:
- Team Vandergriff Collision Center
- Vandergriff Collision North
- Vandergriff Collision South
- Westway Ford Collision (also donated vehicle)
- Grapevine Ford Collision (also donated vehicle)
Recycled Rides® is a community awareness project whereby members of the NABC repair and donate refurbished vehicles to families and service organizations in need throughout the United States.
